Before Setting up Your First Adwords Campaign
- Read Google's Adwords guidelines before you even set up an account so you are familiar with what is allowed and not allowed.
- Decide what you are going to sell and who you are going to sell it to. Decide what makes you stand out from your competitors. Focus on your most relevant keywords and long tailed keyword terms. Long tailed keywords are phrases instead of just one keyword. For example, if you have a dog website instead of advertising under the keyword "dog" come up with phrases such as "dog training for chows", you will get a much better return for your money. Target your search terms and insure that they are relevant to the content on your website, they will convert better than words or phrases that are not as appropriate for your offer.
- Optimize your landing pages for the keywords you are targeting. This is probably the biggest mistake people make when using Google advertising. If the content on your landing pages isn't relevant to the keywords and phrases your using it will become very expensive very quickly for you. - Perform keyword research. Try to think of the main keywords or phrases that people would enter into a search engine that are related to your product. You can use the keyword research tools listed below to research how many times each keyword or phrase has been searched on in the last month. Also research alternative or similar keywords. Save the keyword's and phrases you have researched in notepad for use in your campaign. Google Adwords Keyword Tool
- Follow Google's guidelines and write your ad copy in notepad. Write several versions of your ad so you can split test them in your campaign. After a month or so you can pause or re-write the under performing ad and continue split testing until you have the best performing ad running 100% of the time. Optimizing your ads for click-through rate, will help you achieve higher placement at a lower cost.
- Split-test from top to bottom. 1. Headline
- You might consider creating customized landing pages for specific keywords. Certain types of pages will convert better for some terms than for others.

Setting Up Your Campaign
Go to Google Adwords website to create an account.
After getting your account set up log in and go to Create Campaign. When setting up a new campaign you can decide how much you are willing to pay per click and per day. You can choose a maximum cost-per-click (CPC) from $0.05 - $50. If you set your daily budget for $50 per day at .10 cents per click, you will get a maximum of 500 clicks per day. Once you have reached your limit for that day, Google will automatically suspend running your ad until the next day.
When creating a new AdWords campaign, consider bidding higher than you normally would for some important terms. This is an approach unique to Google because it rewards a higher click-through ratio (CTR). Your CTR will be higher if your ads appear higher in the search results.
